Hey everybody,
I was excited to get the news from Sonya that Tulane's Digital Library is archiving WTUL's collection of ephemera, recordings, etc. If there are any recordings of bands who performed at WTUL or at a show we promoted we could possibly put them up on the Free Music Archive. I am an admin for that site, you can find out more about it here:
http://freemusicarchive.org/about/
The site is a collection of free, legal music people can download, all using Creative Commons licenses. Creative Commons gives creators more flexibility in how they license their work than conventional copyrights. The music director there was interested in getting music from New Orleans. So far WWOZ has not been in touch with him. I was wondering if we had any music to contribute, but from the time I've been here it seems more like WTUL gives interviews, but not so much live performances. In the past were there more live performances or recordings of bands at venues in the city? If anybody at the station has recordings of performances from over the years please let me know or let Sonya know. The bands would have to be contacted to sign a Creative Commons form from the Free Music Archive. The site takes a curatorial approach, so they are selective, but I imagine with the fertile music scene in this city there has got to be some good stuff WTUL has recorded. Thanks for any leads or info!
